Our Vision

The SAGES Education & Research Foundation was created with the vision of a healthcare world in which all operative procedures are accomplished with the least possible physical trauma, discomfort, and loss of productive time for the patient.

Our Mission

The mission of the SAGES Education & Research Foundation is to advance laparoscopic, endoscopic, and emerging minimal access surgical methods by supporting reproducible scientific research, graduate and postgraduate education, and public information.

A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDATION PRESIDENT

This year marks the 30thanniversary of SAGES, an anniversary that will serve as this year’s focal point of our Foundation’s activities.  I recently asked members of SAGES to consider the 30 for 30 option: creating an automatic contribution of $30 per month to the SAGES Foundation.  If such a request were answered by one fifth of our active members, and by non-member friends, those funds alone would more than support an annual research grant.  More important, the greater the participation from all members of SAGES and the surgical community, from our industry partners, and our friends in the private sector, the greater is the “ownership” of our organization by those who share our vision and goals.

Corporate grants and individual donations have enabled the foundation to continue our positive progress toward meeting our goals of supporting many major projects in surgical education and research. At the 2011 SAGES Foundation Awards Luncheon, the Foundation awarded its inaugural Excellence in Medical Leadership Award, a scholarship fully funded by a generous grant from Gore & Associates.  This represents yet another significant long-term partnership between the Foundation and an industry partner.  Our thanks to W.L. Gore & Associates for investing in the future with this generous gift!

To date, the Foundation has awarded more than $1 million in educational and research projects.  In the past year alone, our funded projects include:

  1. Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery program- FES
  2. SAGES Research Grants
  3. SAGES Global Affairs Initiative
  4. Career Development Award
  5. Excellence in Medical Leadership Scholarship

Major new giving initiatives include the ongoing development of the Margret Oddsdottir Traveling Fellowship Fund which is expected to raise sufficient funds to award an annual traveling grant to the SAGES meeting in Dr. Oddsdottir’s memory.

As the Foundation continues the beginning of its second decade and SAGES begins its fourth, we look forward to the days when the Foundation does even more to serve as the financial base of strength for great projects of surgical education and research.  We have accomplished that mission for a number of important projects.  But the list of potential causes and areas where funds can produce substantial gains toward the well being of our patients is large.  Please navigate this entire website and consider making a contribution to SAGES Foundation this year.  Consider it an investment towards building toward the future!!

With my enthusiastic best wishes,

Bruce Schirmer, M.D.
