Excellence in Medical Leadership Scholarship

Applications open December 5, 2025 and are due by January 23, 2026.

This scholarship is generously funded through an unrestricted educational grant from W.L. Gore & Associates and is supported by Sages Foundation. It is designated for a surgeon who completed their residency and/or fellowship.

Purpose

This scholarship provides the recipient the opportunity to participate in a leadership program that will facilitate the development of their leadership, strategy, management and execution skills and understanding. The intent of the award is to optimize the awardee’s impact and capabilities to deliver sustainable results throughout their surgical career.

The scholarship will enable the recipient to attend a five-day program that will expose them to expansive self-examination practices which may result in fruitful personal changes and to think about organizational development in new ways. The winner will receive complimentary registration for the SAGES Annual Meeting in the award year and one complimentary night in an official event hotel during the meeting.

Criteria

  1. Must be a SAGES Active or Candidate Member.
  2. The Applicant must submit the following with their application:
    • One-page essay on why you wish to apply for this award/grant
    • Current abbreviated CV
  3. The scholarship will provide up to $8,000 for expenses (i.e. room/board, transportation and the cost of the course) for the award winner to attend a leadership program at a Recommended Academic Institution (a list will be provided).

Interested parties may self-nominate for this award. The winner will be chosen by the SAGES Awards Committee based on merit and their desire to attend the five-day program.
